“I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,” John 1:23.
As we anticipate the coming of our Lord and Savior during this Advent season, may we be reminded of the testimony of John the Baptist. As he is the voice of one calling out to all to prepare the way of the Lord as we will receive the gracious bounty of our God.
As the priests and Levites were sent to question who John the Baptist was, John quickly assured them that he was not the Messiah, but pointed them to look for the one who was mightier than he. In our own lives, do we not quickly look for the easy fixes or fast solutions to remedy our problems only to realize that they are not the answer? John the Baptist wanted them to realize that the one who was coming after him was one who would be mighty than he. Jesus, our Christ, who the Spirit descended on following his baptism, is the true answer as he will lead us into true victory. We must always be seeking our Savior through the gift of forgiveness as we are surrounded by God’s grace and favor. The promise of God had been fulfilled, so may we extend that joy and favor to all persons assuring them that they are loved, accepted, and have found favor, because of God’s gift to us.
Gracious and bountiful God, we praise and thank you for your care throughout our daily lives. May we draw strength and favor from the one whom you sent into the world to bring us peace and wholeness once again. In our Savior’s precious name. Amen
