Domestic Hunger
In the United States there are 15.9 million children going to bed every night hungry. Not only are the children hungry, but so are single parents, people that work 40 hours a week and elders as well. How can this be in the richest country in the world? There are many ways to battle this reality: backpack ministry, community baskets—both mobile and stationary, going shopping for the shut-ins and elders, serving lunches during the summer months for the children, etc. There are grants available to help churches and individuals who want to do something but don’t have the money or the know-how to get started. Often, what is needed most is a structure and a plan. Once developed, you will be surprised by the many caring hearts that will emerge when people know you are doing this type of work. And they will help in any way you need them!! The Western Iowa Synod Global Mission/Hunger network is starting a sub-network to help battle domestic hunger, whereby members will collectively advocate, brainstorm and find ways to make an impact in our/your local context. If you would like to be a part of this effort, please contact Brenda Manmiller at shelliedan24@gmail.com or Cindy Wells, WIS Director for Global Mission, at cindy.wells@wisynod.org(712-732-4968 Ext. 441). The group itself will determine its meetings schedule, many of which are now occurring online in the comfort of your home or elsewhere. Repeatedly, God calls us to “feed the hungry”. While there are hungry people everywhere in the world, this sub-network’s goal is specifically to help locally. It is sad to say, but we all live in communities where there are hungry people. Please join us in answering that call. Please pray for these efforts. Thank you. If your congregation sponsors a food ministry, we want to know about it. Please fill out this form in order to share with us your ministry. Thank you!
