Conference of Presidents, Women of the ELCA
Judy Lang, president of the Western Iowa Synodical Women’s Organization, attended the Conference of Presidents of the Women of the ELCA at the Lutheran Center in Chicago on February 20 – 22, 2015. The theme was “The Dance Is On.” This is an annual conference of synodical presidents (64 of them) for the purpose of learning, sharing, worship, and fellowship.
We heard about the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation and had a workshop on Human Trafficking. The other workshops were on leadership and communication. Pastor Jennifer Thomas led our Bible study and worship. We had times to share with the presidents from our region. We heard from the staff of Women of the ELCA in Chicago and some of the plans for the next year and the next Triennial Gathering in Minneapolis in July of 2017. A liturgical dance group praised God in their interpretation of two songs.
We each were to bring two pieces of fleece 80 inches long. We tied them into blankets during the weekend. We made over 50 of them. We also brought gift cards, that totaled over $4,000, to give to Dream Catchers. Dream Catchers serves those who are victims of human trafficking, those who have been trafficked and are out of it and trying to get their lives back.
One of the highlights from me was seeing women I had met at other conferences and meeting new ones. This year, I met the granddaughter of a couple who were members of Silver Lake Lutheran, one of the churches where my husband served as pastor. I always come home with more than I can share. God is alive in the Women of the ELCA!
